In 1947, he was elected President of the Kenya African Union, through which he lobbied for independence from British colonial rule, attracting widespread indigenous support but animosity from white settlers. He returned to Kenya in 1946 and became a school principal. Influenced by his friend George Padmore, he embraced anti-colonialist and Pan-African ideas, co-organising the 1945 Pan-African Congress in Manchester. In 1938, he published an anthropological study of Kikuyu life before working as a farm labourer in Sussex during the Second World War. During the 1930s, he studied at Moscow's Communist University of the Toilers of the East, University College London, and the London School of Economics. In 1929, he travelled to London to lobby for Kikuyu land affairs. Educated at a mission school, he worked in various jobs before becoming politically engaged through the Kikuyu Central Association. The Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University who has served in the capacity for quite a number of years, has stepped aside from the institution this afternoon. This afternoon, according to reliable reports from TV 47 Kenya, in Nairobi County the Vice Chancellor of the prestigious Kenyatta University has resigned this afternoon under unclear circumstances. The launch of the World Health Organization project was done a few days ago in pomp and glamor but some circles in the political divide felt like this was out of place. This did not auger well with the administration of the institution who felt like they were sidelined by the Government in setting up of the project at the place as per the reports that we have. The government institution has been improving and recently, the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, was there for another ground breaking ceremony with the World Health Organization for the setting up of a regional research facility. The institution also houses one of the most sought after hospitals in the East and Central African region which is known as the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital as well as a mortuary. Kenyatta University is one of the biggest and oldest institutions of higher learning in the country which has grown over the years to be a regional powerhouse with all that it has accomplished.
